In November 2023, two days after the Election of the Amherst Town
Board, it was announced that Supervisor Kulpa and his Board ( Shaun
Lavin , Jackie Berger , Mike Zsukala ) all voted to override the
State Tax Cap of 2% and raise our Property Taxes by 11.4 % .
Upon learning this, I began attending the meetings of the Amherst Town
Board. As of today, I have
attended nineteen meetings, and I have been shocked both by the
board's practices and by its out-of-control spending .
The projects on which this board is spending taxpayer money are both
inappropriate and irresponsible.
To identify just a few of these illogical expenditures: the LED
streetlight conversion ($33 million), the purchase of Westwood Country
Club ($8 million), construction of a performance facility for a
privately owned theatrical company on town
park land ($11 million), a sports complex for the private
Daemen University ($7.1 million), and the surreptitious hiring of dozens of
administrative workers for jobs that never existed in the town before
(at a cost of approximately $4 million annually).
Residents of the Town of Amherst have been asleep at the wheel!
Partly because of the Covid restrictions, and for another year after
that, Supervisor
Kulpa and his board were not holding open meetings . It was during
this time that
they went to work planning and implementing all this out-of-control
spending when it could be done without scrutiny.
Taking it upon myself to sound the alarm, I began having signs made up
that read "NO MORE 11.4". I am distributing these around the town as much
as possible and speaking up at every Amherst Town Board meeting. This
has become my mission .
Many residents have joined the fight and it is ongoing every day!
We love our town and we certainly are not going to stand by and watch
these practices
diminish and destroy it. Please join us and help with this noble cause .
Thank you, and God Bless.
